PCC lends his support to National Hate Crime Awareness Week

‘The only thing I hate is hate itself’ is the message from Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner Lorne Green on the eve of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

‘Supporting victims and reducing vulnerability’ is one of the core priorities highlighted in the PCC’s Police and Crime Plan and Lorne has spoken of his on-going pledge to tackle the issue in the county.

Norfolk PCC, Lorne Green, said: “When I became PCC, I made it clear from day one that I will not tolerate any form of hate crime.

“Hate crime was one of a number of concerns highlighted by Norfolk communities during my consultation on crime and policing priorities, which helped inform my Police and Crime Plan.

“Some 14% of people who took part in the consultation said that hate crime was one of the top five issues which mattered most to them.

“The only thing I hate, is hate itself and I am working closely within our communities to ensure that minority groups feel reassured, that they are confident in reporting what they have experienced and understand that we will deal robustly with any individuals or groups committing hate-related crime.

"It is important that we unite together against hate crime and I would encourage everyone to support this worthy week of action."

In July Lorne launched a £450,000 fund to support hidden victims of crime and reduce vulnerability in Norfolk.

The Hidden Victim’s Fund, which will run over three years, will support pilot projects, preventative work and service delivery in 10 key areas including ‘Hate Crime’.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place from 13 to 20 October 2018.

The week of action aims to bring people together to stand with those affected by hate crime, to remember those who have been lost and to support those who need on-going support.
