Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner thanks police officers following violent protests in Thetford

A message from Colin Sutton, Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk

What we have seen over the course of these three nights in Thetford is shocking. What started out as peaceful protest soon turned into violence and criminal damage. I would like to thank the officers of Norfolk Constabulary for putting themselves in danger to protect residents.

Although I understand the concerns that people in Thetford have around housing and safety, and absolutely support their right to protest peacefully, there is no place for the violence and damage to continue after three consecutive nights of unacceptable behaviour.

Norfolk Constabulary will facilitate peaceful protest but when the line is crossed and violence is offered - let’s not forget,  rocks were thrown at police officers and a police officer was bitten - then it goes without saying that the police will have my full support in dealing with these offences as firmly and as swiftly as they can.

As we head towards the weekend, I urge residents of Thetford to stay calm and, if you wish to protest, do so in a peaceful and respectful way without resorting to criminality.

Next week, I will be meeting with councillors and partners to discuss the concerns residents have around the imposition of unvetted men into their community. And I call upon the Home Office to hear their voices, to understand their concerns and to make a genuine effort to resolve them.
